VISIT 34

Benalmádena – Alhaurín de la Torre

The visit will begin with a breakfast in Benalmádena, a touristic town located in the region of Costal del Sol that extends from Sierra de Mijas to the sea. We will visit the Estupa de la Iluminación (a Buddhist monument), the castle Castillo Colomares, a handicraft production that tells the discovery of America, as well as the old town, which preserves the same old layout typical of the Andalusian towns, full of white houses and narrow streets.

Next, we will set a course for Alhaurín de la Torre, the second most populated town in the province of Málaga. This place, located in the region of Guadalhorce valley, has been able to maintain its identity and traditions despite of the urban growth. We will go for a walk through the circuses and visit the park Parque Chino, the municipal park and the Finca el Portón, an ideal environment and natural setting for the organization of events related to music, theatre, dance and plastic arts. We will also visit the old town, the church Iglesia de San Sebastián and the old hiding place Casa Refugio de Torrijos.

In 1831, General José María Torrijos led an uprising against the absolutism of King Fernando 7th. His objective was to restore the Constitution of 1812, but following his betrayal at the hands of the governor of Málaga, he fled from the royal troops to Alhaurín de la Torre, hiding in the farmhouse known as Hacienda de la Alquería, which belonged to the Count of Mollina. Following his capture on the fifth of December 1831, he and his companions were shot on the eleventh of December on the beach of El Carmen, in Málaga. His remains are currently buried beneath the square Plaza de la Merced.

We will eat lunch with a flamenco group that will perform a flamenco singing show.
